There are native american stories of monsters that lived in shallow waters of the rivers. they were called water babies. these water babies had long black hair, they looked like fish but also had claws. Their mouth were so huge that you could see there razor sharp teeth. There names were given to them for a reason, they could cry like babies and little children.
One story was back when there were only indians in the U.S.. It was told that a young woman was down by the river with her new born son. She was picking berries by the river and left her baby by the river bank. While she was a distance from her son, a water baby came out of the river and ate the baby. Then it somehow tranformed itself to look like the woman's baby.
When the woman came back, she could hear her son crying, so she went to breast feed him thinking that maybe he was hungry. suddenly the water baby latched on to her breast and began eating her for supper.
Two day's had past and none of the tribal indian's seen or heard from her and her son. Her husband had became so worried, that he decided to go to the river where she and their baby were last seen. Before he got there, the same water baby had made itself look like the man's wife.
The man seen her sitting down on a rock and ran toward the woman not knowing it was the creature. Then without knowing what happened to him, the water baby grabbed him and then tore him into pieces. Then he was eaten by the creature, never to be heard of again.
they might still be around. So next time you go by a river, be careful because there may be a water baby near by....
